Welcome to Donny first Post of DDIY - Donny DIY.
As we know a port-replicator is always pricey. It may cost around RM500 - 700. A good one may even price above RM1000. Here with DDIY, you can save hundreds of dollar. All you need is a magazine rack, dish rack and screws from dish rack. The required tools are screw driver, NT cutter, plyer and sand paper. If you have a vice, it will be very handy. You can get the magazine rack from a book store or Jusco between RM7.90 to RM29.90. I bought one at Jusco for RM10.90 just because it is a good size and the wood quality is better compare to others. Next, I bought a dish rack from Hot Market at Klang Parade at RM10. You can easily find them at 688 or budget store in Kuching.
I simply change the magazine rack hinge from the middle wood frame to near end of wood frame. You need not drill holes again because there are holes already for the horizontal round wood stick. The middle wood frame hole will be used again for the elbow support.
Remove the legs of the dish rack. Use a blade to remove the side wall of the dish rack and leave one longer width wall for book support or laptop support. Use sand paper to remove the sharp edges. Install dish rack on the frame using screws. Bend the stanless steel leg (from the dish plate rack) into an elbow support as seen in the image. Install the support at the middle holes of the frame. Wala, you now have a DDIY port replicator or a book rack; build merely at around RM20. I have tested using my laptop for more than a year and I am still using it. It is strong and cheap to build. What's more! I hooked up a temperature reading at the bottom of my laptop while it was tilted. It was found the cooling was effective. Believe it!
I just recevied one order. Hence, I may include the photo of step by step how to build the rack in the future. Till then, Happy DIY.
